This painting is based on a vivid dream of artist Simon Lewis Birch.

'I was lying in a narrow canoe like boat at night and drifting towards the Bishop Rock Lighthouse. The Bishop Rock Lighthouse is situated on rocks at the most westerly point of the Isles of Scilly archipelago. I have taken boat trips out there, to the Western Rocks, where I felt the power of the Atlantic Ocean at the point where it deepens dramatically.' - Simon Lewis Birch

I this painting he captures many different perspectives, incorporating shapes that depict boats, rocks, light beams and drifting fog. The scratches into the paint represent sea and sound waves; the oranges – rust, buoys and lifejackets; and the deep blue tones represent deep water, sleep and dreaming.

Mixed media painting on board by Simon Lewis Birch in a white wood tray frame.

Painting size: 50cm x 50cm

Framed size: 55cm x 55cm

About this Artist

Simon is based in Cornwall, and for over thirty years his practice has moved between dance and visual art. His background in choreography continues to shape how he paints: each work is approached as a form of choreography, a dynamic relationship between space, time and energy. He is currently exhibiting with us in the new show 'Evoke.'

Trained initially in visual art and later in contemporary dance, he has always worked across disciplines, creating and presenting work in galleries, theatres and outdoor environments. Simon sees his artwork as part of a continuous exchange between the visual and the kinetic.

This exhibition brings together paintings from several collections, created over time and in dialogue with one another. Land and seascapes are central to his work. These recurring themes, and in some pieces birds, reflect both a deep love of the natural world and an ongoing concern for its fragility. Movement, mindfulness and close attention to nature underpin his practice, and through his work Simon invites a deeper awareness of place and a renewed sense of connection, respect and care for the world we inhabit.
