Situated on the Helford estuary near Falmouth, Durgan is a charming hamlet. The lane leading down to it is framed by majestic trees. The painting evokes the calming nature of this location.

Rendered with a blend of autumnal colours and soft brushwork, Durgan reflects Simon's initial experience of this picturesque spot. The work recalls an early September when he, accompanied by a friend, walked from Durgan along the coast path to the Ferry Boat Inn at Helford Passage.

Acrylic and charcoal on board by Simon Lewis Birch in a white wood tray frame.

Painting size: 84 x 59cm

Framed size: 87 x 62cm

About this Artist

Simon is based in Cornwall, and for over thirty years his practice has moved between dance and visual art. His background in choreography continues to shape how he paints: each work is approached as a form of choreography, a dynamic relationship between space, time and energy. He is currently exhibiting with us in the new show 'Evoke.'

Trained initially in visual art and later in contemporary dance, he has always worked across disciplines, creating and presenting work in galleries, theatres and outdoor environments. Simon sees his artwork as part of a continuous exchange between the visual and the kinetic.

This exhibition brings together paintings from several collections, created over time and in dialogue with one another. Land and seascapes are central to his work. These recurring themes, and in some pieces birds, reflect both a deep love of the natural world and an ongoing concern for its fragility. Movement, mindfulness and close attention to nature underpin his practice, and through his work Simon invites a deeper awareness of place and a renewed sense of connection, respect and care for the world we inhabit.
