‘…The menace and caress of wave that breaks on water,
The distant rote in the granite teeth,
And the wailing warning from approaching headland
Are the all sea voices, and heaving groaner
Rounded homewards, and the seagull:
And under the oppression of the silent fog
The tolling bell…’ - T.S Elliot

This painting is also inspired by the moments when Simon has stood on the edge of the ocean or indeed been on it in rough weather. These experiences are, for him, metaphors for life; we ride the surface of the waves of our lives and from time to time what we hold deep inside – memories and emotions, appear on the surface, drawn up from the depths of our being like objects drawn up from the seabed.

Mixed media painting on board by Simon Lewis Birch in a wooden frame.

About this Artist

Simon is based in Cornwall, and for over thirty years his practice has moved between dance and visual art. His background in choreography continues to shape how he paints: each work is approached as a form of choreography, a dynamic relationship between space, time and energy. He is currently exhibiting with us in the new show 'Evoke.'

Trained initially in visual art and later in contemporary dance, he has always worked across disciplines, creating and presenting work in galleries, theatres and outdoor environments. Simon sees his artwork as part of a continuous exchange between the visual and the kinetic.

This exhibition brings together paintings from several collections, created over time and in dialogue with one another. Land and seascapes are central to his work. These recurring themes, and in some pieces birds, reflect both a deep love of the natural world and an ongoing concern for its fragility. Movement, mindfulness and close attention to nature underpin his practice, and through his work Simon invites a deeper awareness of place and a renewed sense of connection, respect and care for the world we inhabit.
